Background of the study
Workplace discrimination remains a pervasive issue affecting employee morale and productivity, particularly in private sector firms. In Orlu Local Government Area, Imo State, discriminatory practices based on gender, ethnicity, or other personal attributes create an environment that undermines employee performance and overall organizational productivity (Nwankwo, 2023). Such discriminatory environments hinder career progression, lead to reduced job satisfaction, and often result in higher employee turnover. Organizations that fail to implement equitable practices risk losing valuable talent and facing decreased competitive advantage (Okoro, 2024). Furthermore, workplace discrimination can adversely affect team dynamics and stifle innovation, as employees who feel marginalized are less likely to contribute meaningfully (Uche, 2023). With increasing awareness and legal frameworks aimed at curbing discrimination, there is a need to appraise its current effects on productivity within private firms. This study intends to critically analyze how discriminatory practices manifest in the workplace, evaluate their impacts on productivity, and explore the potential benefits of diversity and inclusion policies. Recent empirical studies support the view that fostering a non-discriminatory work environment contributes positively to organizational growth and employee engagement (Ekwueme, 2025).
Statement of the problem
In Orlu, persistent workplace discrimination in private firms has emerged as a critical barrier to employee productivity. Discriminatory practices not only lower job satisfaction but also hinder career advancement, leading to a loss of talent and organizational inefficiencies. Such practices disrupt team cohesion and impair overall performance. The need to examine and address these discriminatory factors is crucial to ensuring a fair and productive work environment. This study seeks to identify the forms of discrimination and quantify their impact on employee productivity, aiming to provide recommendations for fostering equitable work practices (Chidiebere, 2024).
